[SBB] Chipping Sparrows, dragonflies at Monte Bello

At the little pond below Monte Bello OSP's Gate 5 this morning (7/21/2005) a couple of silent Chipping Sparrows flew in to the willows. One of them was in breeding plumage, the other was a streaky juvenile. The willows also contained a female Black-throated Gray Warbler, an Orange-crowned Warbler, and two Wilson's Warblers, all silent except for an occasional chip. Also, I forgot to mention previously that on 7/15 an Olive-sided Flycatcher was still audible from the pond, although it may have been on the San Mateo side of the line.

I finally did my homework on the dragonflies there, too. Most common - present by the hundreds - are the small blue Western Pondhawks. Western Meadowhawk, Flame Skimmer, 8-Spotted Skimmer, and Common Green Darner are also numerous. Mixed in there are a few Blue-eyed Darner, Black Saddlebags (a new one for me), and Widow Skimmers.

On 7/15 my daughter and I encountered an out-of-habitat Pacific Spiketail dragonfly on the slope above the pond. That's a handsome bug!
