I heard and then saw my first BROWN-HEADED COWBIRD in my neighborhood
near (Tully Rd and Ruby Ave, SJ). They have been in Cunningham Park, of
coarse, but this is the 1st I have seen around here. Does the cowbird
have that squeaky voice from birth or does it imitate its host species?
I'm wondering because I saw a very plain brown colored juvie oriole and
am wondering if it was a juvie cowbird. It was chattering like an
oriole, though. The young orioles I have seen at the feeder at least
have a hint of yellow, but this one was very plain.
I have several families of HOODED ORIOLES coming to my feeder. There is
a youngster following Dad around the yard, screaming to be fed. Dad is
usually very shy so I'm sure he does not appreciate all the attention. I
have noticed, in general, the mature males are much more shy than the
females and juveniles.
