I birded a short time in Quicksilver Co. Park at the Mockingbird Hill
entrance at noon today. I immediately heard loud whistling calls
nearby and couldn't imagine what I was going to find. A short way up
the New Almaden trail were two juvenile Coopers Hawks. One was on the
ground right at my feet and flew into the tree with a small rodent.
The smaller perched juvenile never saw me and continued to call. They
were stunning with sparse fine dark brown streaks on their breast and
belly. I kept looking at the smaller hawks eyes which were a pale
blue green. Their nest was right over the trail, the same location
I've seen in previous years.
I walked to the other side of the parking lot and found a male Blue
gray Gnatcatcher in a Live Oak tree. I took the Viryl Norton trail a
short distance finding two Red tailed Hawk juveniles perched in a
large oak tree also calling. These two juveniles were beautiful with
a creamy breast and very bold dark striped belly band. They flew
overhead one after the other but one more was calling from the tree.
I didn't find it but watched the two juveniles flying over the hills
with an adult flying above. Walking back to the car a high flying Red
shouldered Hawk was seen and heard. Other than the hawks the birds
were pretty scarce today.
