[SBB] Upper Stevens Creek CP, Saratoga Gap OSP 7/19/2005

Plans to walk the Table Mtn loop this morning 7/19/2005 collapsed in the heat of a late start so I walked almost 2 miles of the shady & level Saratoga Gap trail instead. It was quiet as expected, but nice to see what little there was.

I met Alan & Karen Thomas, who were already finishing up, at the trailhead, where we listened to a Warbling Vireo singing enthusiastically as if it were still May. During my walk I encountered at least 4 more singing WAVI, so I guess the breeding season is still ON for them up there. Chestnut-backed Chickadees were the bird du jour though, with large aggregations all over the place.

Two silent Cassin's Vireos were foraging together in a madrone near the Saratoga Gap Trail/Charcoal Road junction. Two Red-breasted Nuthatches beeped at each other near that spot also. A female Wilson's Warbler there was really out of place.

A female Black-throated Gray Warbler, close to the point where the trail first meets the SG-OSP, beat the living daylights out of a big caterpillar before carrying it off to hidden young somewhere. Another Red-breasted Nuthatch called from the trees near the CDF fire station on Skyline Blvd, (the road is just a few yards away along most of this trail.) Finally, three Pacific-slope Flycatchers called at widely separate points.
