[SBB] EEC and Coopers Hawks

Friday, Toni Koenen and I went to the EEC and surrounding area. Along the levy between New Chicago Marsh and A16 we saw lots os babies. On the islands in A16 were many nesting FORSTERS TERNS some with little tiny chicks. Although most AMERICAN AVOCETS are finished nesting there are a few late ones incubating and still a lot of small chickies to see. Also, a few late BLACK-NECK STILTS chicks. Many LEAST SANDPIPERS were seen and 2 BLACK SKIMMERS on the first island . We missed the phalaropes. I think I saw some in the distance but a PEREGRINE FALCON swooped down and flushed that part of the marsh and we did not see the phalaropes again to confirm.

Along the slough beside the ECC were SNOWY EGRETS, BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT HERONS, GREAT EGRET, GREAT BLUE HERON and about 35 LEAST SANDPIPERS. Peeked in the owl box but no one was home. In a willow tree were 2 BEWICKS WRENS and a DOWNY WOODPECKER. We also saw several MARSH WRENS and many SAVANNA SPARROWS. CLIFF and BARN SWALLOWS were fliting everywhere.

Leaving ECC we saw the usual BURROWING OWLS east of the railroad tracks in New Chicago Marsh. We also saw one on a fence near the end of Spreckles St. We saw 2 more at the Arzino Ranch along Zanker Rd. I saw one earlier that morning at the corner of HWY. 237 and Zanker.

Toni took me to see a nest of COOPERS HAWKS located near Montague and River Oaks. There were 4 babies that appear to be newly fledged. They could fly but stayed close to home. One adult flew in from time to time with birds and rodents to feed the youngsters. The ground was littered with carcasses. We spent at least 30 min. watching them.

Happy birding!
