All,
This morning, in hopes of finding something new in the county, Frank
Vanslager and I first checked out the Sunnyvale Water Treatment Facility and the
nearby Lockheed Martin Marsh. The Water Treatment Facility Ponds themselves
were fairly empty with just a few ducks in both ponds. The marsh and Salt Pond
A4 were also fairly slow but Salt Pond A3W had a good concentration of RUDDY
DUCKS with a few Scaup, WESTERN and CLARK'S GREBES mixed in. On the way back
to the parking lot a PEREGRINE FALCON was spotted flying over the marsh, a
GREEN HERON and a BURROWING OWL were flushed. We then went to the Palo Alto
Duck Pond, the Yacht Harbor and finally to the Yacht Harbor entrance. Here we
spotted a smaller, male Peregrine Falcon attacking and being attacked by a
larger, female PEFA. Both PEFA were very vocal and we assumed a lover's
quarrel however, after a few minutes a second female PEFA soon joined the fray
with the end result that the original female ultimately flew west along the
Power Lines and out of sight. The remaining pair were both adult PEFA but we
were unable to age the original female.
Take care,
Bob Reiling
