[SBB] Ed Levin and Iceland Gull

Howdy there SBBers.....

I too went for the Iceland Gull today...but you guys know me... I got lost
and wound up in Ed Levin Park...so while there I looked for the owls....was
thrilled to see a Barn Owl and sorry to say I missed the Long-earred by a few
minutes.

While walking around the circle of trees a small chick wound up at my feet
(why me?) and I was most uspet....at first I thought it was some type of
Quail....I managed to get in to go into the grass...as I walked further I found
another dead chick and another live one..... I let them be and went back to
find the Iceland Gull at Hidden Lake....

Upon arriving at Hidden Lake (thanks to Jean and Betty for directions) I
found birders coming and going....There I had the opportunity to look through
Mike Roger's scope (thanks Mike) at my Iceland Gull lifer....Al Deikmann (sp?)
was there and I explained to the guys about the chicks I had just left at Ed
Levin.

Al and I went back to Ed Levin where we quickly learned that one of the
chicks had just been eaten....and Al and I discovered 7 eggs and one live
chick....we are thinking it may be a Pheasant chick... I took pictures of the eggs
and a wing that was left....my picture of the chick is very fuzzy.....

Here's my question: Why would three or four chicks be about 6-7 inches long
and then there would be 7 unhatched eggs? All the chicks were about the
same size. I came home and looked in my nests, eggs and nestling books, but
cannot find the egg anywhere to give me a clue of what type of bird we were
looking at....Any help would be appreciated.

On that note....Al and I couldn't relocate the LEOWs...Darn...thanks Al for
your help today with the eggs and chick.

Wishing you all a dry weekend with good birding....

My best regards,
Linda Sullivan
PS...Thanks to Al J..for finding another super gull!
