[SBB] Red phalarope action and other birds locations

There's been a request for more exact locations in my posts. For the red
phalaropes (RP), they were in Crittenden Marsh just east of Stevens Creek,
near the first east-west levee to your right past the old prop-driven plane
(the northwest end of the marsh). I saw around five of them.

I also walked slightly beyond the levee to photograph the ruddy duck (RD)
and black-backed chickadee (BC), and photographed the smaller peeps in the
weeds to either side of the path on top of the north-south levee between
Crittenden Lane and the start of the Stevens Creek trail.

You can park at the end of Crittenden Lane and walk the levee top from
there. You'll see many interesting birds on your way in winter. See Santa
Clara Audubon Society, "Birding at the Bottom of the Bay", Third Edition,
p. 6-8, for information on what you might see there. The City of Mountain
View's map of Shoreline Park and trails shows Crittenden Marsh very well.

After all the reports on the birdwatching lists and the local media, I took
advantage of clear weather for some phalarope pictures this morning
(12/29/2005).

At first, I just took portraits. Then I discovered bills dripping water
after the birds dabbled for food. Finally, I got into full head immersion.
In the end, habits acquired over years of dual slalom race photography took
over for some couples work.
