On Monday, 26 Dec 05, I headed for the Stevens Creek Tidal Marsh to look for
reported phalaropes, but the tide was going out and the marsh was simply
mud. However, a check of Crittenden Marsh at about 11:30 am turned up 13 RED
PHALAROPES. I also checked Shoreline Lake but found nothing unusual. A
NORTHERN FLICKER perched in a tree by the golf course looked to have
characteristics of a YELLOW-SHAFTED. While trying to hunt it down, I saw a
gull chasing an adult GOLDEN EAGLE off towards the west, where the eagle
landed on one of the grassy hills in that direction.
I then went to salt pond A2W to check over the ducks. I couldn't find
anything in amongst the thousands of scaup, but there was a CACKLING GOOSE
all by its lonesome feeding along the southern edge of the pond.
On Christmas morning I made a quick check of Calero Reservoir, where 2 adult
GOLDEN EAGLES were soaring overhead. No Bald Eagle seen.
On Saturday, 24 Dec 05, the adult FERRUGINOUS HAWK was still along Richmond
ave near Santa Teresa Blvd in Coyote Valley. An OSPREY was hanging out at
Parkway Lakes. Two COMMON MOORHEN were in Coyote Creek south of Metcalf Rd,
seemingly an unusual location for them.
