Folks:
This morning, 12/26/05, I visited Shoreline Lake, Salt Pond A1, the Palo
Alto FCB, and the Duck Pond to see if anything was affected by the heavy
rain earlier this morning. Some of the areas I visited I also covered a
week ago on the Palo Alto CBC. I didn't notice any significant changes in
the number of birds at Shoreline Lake or in Salt Pond A1. Like others this
morning, I did find some RED PHALAROPES: two that set down on Salt Pond A1
and then took off flying southeast (towards Sunnyvale and Alviso). There
were also four BROWN PELICANS there, two adults and two immatures, that
were foraging over A1, then gained altitude and eventually flew south. On
Shoreline Lake I saw the male and two female BARROW'S GOLDENEYES and an
immature was there as well, but asleep. (In the last week these birds have
been very close to shore in the northwest corner. You can take the bike
path that goes through the landscaped areas on the north shore and walk
down to the orange construction fence. The birds are readily visible in
the morning without a scope.) Two BEWICK'S WRENS were on the north shore
of Shoreline Lake, both singing identical songs, apparently on adjacent
territories. Their expansion to the bay edge is a fairly recent
phenomenon. Two BURROWING OWLS were on the mound across from Michael's
Restaurant at Shoreline.
