[SBB] County birds

Hi all:

The day started off well with the 7:30--9:30
Sharp-tailed Sandpiper show. Two Tree Swallows, and a
Peregrine Falcon get barely a nod from the crowd.

I left Alviso and went on a raptor hunt on Bailey Rd.
When I took the 101/Bailey Ave exit, an Osprey circled
overhead, looking as confused as I was. If you decide
to use that exit, do it at a time when your patience
level is high.

Anyway, I was looking for a Ferruginous Hawk and
wouldn't be deterred. I finally found a big raptor in
a ploughed field opposite the IBM facility on Bailey
Ave. Dark back, white chest... Ferrug? Nope,
juvenile Osprey. Poor thing was eating dirt for lunch
as far as I could tell. But I suppose she did have
something tasty there.

I ended the day at Arastradero Preserve, where two
adult Golden Eagles were circling to the admiration of
a number of folks in the parking lot. Along the main
trail, two White-tailed Kites were clearly in love,
which led to more research. Learning is good.

Birds of North America Online ($40 for a year; it's
worth it. It's Christmas... I'm just sayin.....):
"Pairs found together year-round, but more individuals
paired Dec through Aug. Courtship behaviors Dec
through Sep."

I'd say it was a bit more than courtship, but that's
just me.

Good birding,
