[SBB] Alviso birds

On Saturday, 10 Dec 05, I went to the Alviso Marina. Minutes before I got
there, the SHARP-TAILED SANDPIPER had flown in to the marshy pond at the
southeast corner of the Marina, on the west side of the railroad tracks.
Here it sat for at least the next 3.5 hours, delighting dozens of birders.
It was viewable from the Marina at distances as close as 20 yards, and from
the railroad tracks at 15 yards. Splendidly cooperative bird.

Other birds in the area included a SAY'S PHOEBE around the same pond as the
sandpiper, a LESSER YELLOWLEGS in the stagnant pond on the west side of the
Marina entrance, and a HOUSE WREN along the levee behind the old cannery
building. A walk alomg the new boardwalk through the marsh produced both a
SORA and a VIRGINIA RAIL feeding side by side.

At one point Jean Meyers came to me and told me of a sparrowy bird she had
seen behind the cannery, which had a lot of white in the plumage. We went to
look for it without any luck, but, returning later to the area, I was able
to find a leucistic WHITE-CROWNED SPARROW.
