[SBB] Acorn Woodpecker distribution

All,

Acorn Woodpeckers are widespread breeding birds in Santa Clara County. During the years of our breeding bird atlas they were recorded in nearly every block away from the urban and bayside areas in the northernwestern part of the county. However, there are two blocks completely surrounded by blocks with Acorn Woodpeckers that have no record of the species at all.

The first is atlas block 7530, which includes much of southern Los Altos Hills and Rancho San Antonio Opens Space Preserve. The block's southern boundary extends from the summit of Black Mountain at Monte Bello OSP east through the quarry north of Permanente Creek. The northern boundary extends from just east of the Hidden Villa turnoff from Moody Road past the southern edge of Foothill College, through the I280/El Monte interchange to the junction of Magdalena and Foothill Expressway. The entire Rancho San Antonio Open Space Preserve west of the farm is in the block as well, as are Elephant Mountain and Ewing Hill east of Hidden Villa.

The second is block 0530, which is centered east of Lake Cunningham. The southern block boundary starts west of Capitol Expressway near Aborn Road  and follows Aborn Road east until the road bends sharply left and climbs into the hills. The northern boundary starts near Mt Pleasant School and follows Clayton Road along Flint Creek up into the hills. The block also includes Lake Cunningham and the nearby Pleasant Hills Golf Course, most of Mt. Pleasant Road, and Quimby Road east a ways up into the hills along Norwood Creek.

If you are aware of any breeding season (April to July) observations of Acorn Woodpeckers in either of these blocks during the atlas years (1987-1993) or postatlas years (1994-2005) please let me know about them so we can add them to the database.

Thank you,
Mike Rogers
