Folks:
Today, 8/18/2005, I birded the rim of the South Bay with John Furse, a
British birder from Norfolk (just east of Cley). We covered the CCFS
waterbird pond, New Chicago Marsh, Palo Alto Baylands, and the Stevens
Creek mouth. Although we found 16 species of shorebirds, we did not see
any of the more unusual ones and none of the good finds in the last week
from New Chicago . Our best shorebirds were probably two LESSER YELLOWLEGS
at the CCFS waterbird pond, about 550 WILSON'S PHALAROPE also still at the
waterbird pond, and single Wilson's and four RED-NECKED PHALAROPE at New
Chicago Marsh.
We spent a bit of time along the cottonwoods along Coyote Creek downstream
of the dogleg at CCFS and found two YELLOW WARBLERS and a female
MACGILLIVRAY'S WARBLER, but no other migrants.
At the Alviso EEC there was an adult PEREGRINE FALCON along the entrance
road and three BROWN PELICANS on the 1st island in Salt Pond A16 (1 imm).
At Shoreline Park at midday, we found only 2 adults and 3 juv BURROWING
OWLS. One of the adults was in the other mound that is closer to the road.
Walking out to the Stevens Creek mouth we found a BLACK TERN foraging over
the surface of Crittenden Marsh. 35 LEAST TERNS were still on the
boardwalk in Salt Pond A2E. The Black Skimmers were no longer on the
island in the northwest corner of Salt Pond B1. In Stevens Creek we
counted five GREEN-WINGED TEAL (eclipse/female), which may be the first
fall birds, rather than oversummering ones.
