All:
This morning, August 18, I had a few interesting sightings at the Sunnyvale
landfill-hill and the Lockheed marsh. First there was a flock of about 100
blackbirds dogging a Peregrine Falcon as it made lazy circles overhead. Then I
saw my first Vaux Swift of the season; the swallows made occasional swipes at
the VASW but never any moves at the nearby White-throated Swifts. Then I saw a
flying (sort-of) Virginia Rail. Further out there were numerous American
White-Pelicans, a couple of Brown Pelicans, both Yellowlegs, both Dowitchers, and
other shorebirds. The trail to pond A3W is firmly closed by Cargill Salt at
the bridge by the Golf Course, so I couldn’t see whether any terns were
gathering out there. This closure will require a drastic change to the forth-coming
birdwalk to this site.
