highlight was
the ORANGE BISHOP
All,
Shortly after Summer left the male and the female ORANGE BISHOP were both
spotted perched at the top of a tree by Juliette (Bryson?) and a friend. The
two birds were perhaps a foot and a half apart. After I got the scope on the
female she perched for perhaps another 30 seconds in the tree with a large
insect in it's beak. She then flew with the insect to a spot in the
northwestern corner of the marsh were the male and female have both been seen
previously. The male then flew to the perch just vacated by the female. Later the
male flew off, until out of sight, in nearly the exact opposite direction that
the female took. It'll be interesting to see what kind of young they raise?
I then returned to New Chicago Marsh where Dave Weber and I had a distant
view of a single BAIRD'S SANDPIPER. Unfortunately we lost the bird when we
moved to a new location in hopes of getting a better look. An adult PEREGRINE
FALCON was on one of the nearby Power Towers shortly after noon.
The water level at the Coyote Creek Field Station Waterbird Pond looked
really good (to me) today. Unfortunately, one can almost see New Chicago Marsh
drying out (is this the New Chicago Meadow of the future?).
Take care,
Bob Reiling
