All,
This morning Peggy Don, Frank Vanslager and I had prolonged sightings of
several juvenile BAIRD'S SANDPIPERS in the far southeastern pond in New Chicago
Marsh. At times the birds in that section of the marsh would flush, for
various reasons, dispersing the BASA. However, we would soon find two BASA
together (often in a muddy portion of the pond) then there would be three and
often four BASA all in one very small compact group. At one point Peggy and I
had five BASA in one scope view. When trying for these birds look for a fairly
large (slightly larger than a Western Sandpiper), buffy breasted sandpiper
with long primaries (projecting well past the tail), a very bright scaly
mantle, a fairly short straight black bill, and black legs.
Take care,
Bob Reiling
