I birded at Vasona today where the sky was reasonably clear. Saw a
male WOOD DUCK still in eclipsed plumage. He's getting more color and
was swimming with the mallards on the pond south of the heronry. Two
SPOTTED SANDPIPERS were working the edge of the pond. They allowed me
to get quite close before flying to the far side. One had quite a few
more spots than the other, and they were much smaller than I'd imagined.
I heard a loud chip call and found three YELLOW WARBLERS in the
nearby eucalyptus trees. A female Downy Woodpecker with a sticky
face was evidence of her feeding on the eucalyptus trees. D.C.
Cormorant, adult and juv. Great Blue Heron, adult and juv.
Black-crowned Night Heron, and Green Heron were also seen in this
area. A Belted Kingfisher flew upstream.
In the Meadow Brook picnic area I found 4 W.TANAGERS, a male BULLOCKS
ORIOLE, several HOODED ORIOLES, 3 YELLOW WARBLERS and a male Downy
Woodpecker. As I left I heard the begging call of a juv. B.H.Cowbird
coming from a garden near the R.R. tracks apparently being fed by
nearby Dark eyed Juncos.

The juvenile B.H. Cowbird I reported seeing in my backyard was part
of the Hooded Orioles second brood. Today I saw a beautiful juvenile
HOOR calling and begging while perched at the feeder. It was quite
yellow and must be a male.
As I write this, there's a large noisy flock of Am. Crows in my
backyard neighbors eucalyptus trees. I just checked and found them
eating tiny berries on one of several variety of eucalyptus.
