According to those who've studied these birds, Dr. Lynne Trulio, et al, Burrowing Owl adults move their brood to new burrows probably to get away from parasites, the accumulated defecation, and the decomposing leftovers from past meals. I recall that one of the broods that used to occur at the Garcia/Amphitheatre Pkwy area, before this area was made uninhabitable for them, moved to new burrows, splitting up into two groups, with one adult overseeing each group.
