South Bay Birders,
This evening (6 August) we had a female Costa's Hummingbird at our feeders. I've been watching our feeders closely and have seen no species other than Anna's (of which we have 10 or so these days) since spring, so this bird has probably not been around long. I first saw it at about 7:30 p.m., and until 8:05 it foraged on and off, spending more time being chased by (and occasionally chasing) the Anna's than actually feeding. It vocalized frequently, giving much higher, more metallic "kip" notes than the Anna's, and frequently running these together into a high stuttering whine when chasing other hummers. I was able to get some decent video and stills.
If the bird is still around tomorrow, I'll get the word out, and birders will be welcome to by and see it.
Good birding,
Steve Rottenborn
