FWIW, my guess is that Chuq's bird was a Red-tailed Hawk. I don't
believe that there are any (maybe one or two?) records of
Ferruginous Hawks in central California in summer. This is
strictly a winter bird, showing up normally in late October or
early November. Size differences are difficult to make with single
birds. Red-taileds have such a variety of plumages that they cover
the spectrum. You need that camera!
I"m sure Bill's right (as always!) -- if I see it again, I'll get a
better look at it. It just seemed a really large bird for a red tail,
but not unbelievably so.
We also (I realize I haven't mentioned it) have a family of barn
swallows visiting us from over in Central Park (santa clara). they've
nested over there somewhere, but we see them every week or so, and
have caught them coming over to sit and sun on our neighbors tv
antennas. at least 6 invidividuals.
The final oriole count this year is three -- adult male, adult
female, and a younger male but not the pair's kid. All hoodies, all
very shy.
