Mike,
I finally tracked down the DARK-EYED JUNCO sounds on
La Avenida/corner of Armand. A male was getting 3
juveniles (still with yellow at the corner of their
mouths) to feed with him on the grass, dirt, street,
bushes. They made an incessant trill that was hard to
miss. I assume this counts as evidence of breeding,
given that the adult Junco has been in the same area
for weeks?
In Stevens Creek at La Avenida were 3 Mallards hauled
out on the rocks, accompanied by a pair of COMMON
MERGANSERS.
Birds singing or flying: NRW Swallow, American
Goldfinches, Bewick's Wren, Bushtits, Song Sparrows,
Anna's HBird (1 female and 1 immature? male with a
touch of red on its head).
I stopped briefly at the Casey Forebay to look for
Skimmers--none was visible on the near side of the
island. In the forebay, however, were 2 pair of
CINNAMON TEAL, one with a single downy baby. Do they
breed here? I guess they do!
AMERICAN AVOCET with 3 downy young
AMERICAN COOTS with 4 red downy young
Nest on the power tower at Marine and Coast (near
Intuit)-- big round stick nest; could not see
occupants except for an occassional wing with lots of
lacey air in the wind and what looked like a long,
thin Raven or Crow-like Bill. The nest is not as big
as our neighbording Red-tailed Hawk nest and is more
rounded.
