Yesterday I went to checkout the heron colony at Lake Cunningham. So far
there are 5 GREAT EGRET nests, 4 incubating and 1 still in construction.
The BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT HERONS chicks are making themselves visible. It
is hard to see the nests as most are hidden in the Salt Brush, but the
chicks grow fast and many are sunning themselves now. I have located 10
BCNH nests w/ chicks. There were many SNOWY EGRETS roosting and I may
have found 2 nest sights. I saw 2 adult SNEGS with building material,
but they went into the brush. There was another bird in an incubating
position, but I couldn't tell if it was a SNEG or a GREG. I think its a
SNEG but I will just have to watch and see what it is. Also, seen were 2
or 3 (one may have been a repeat) GREEN HERONS. I saw 2 flying across
the lake togther. Later another (or the same) was sneaking into the BCNH
nests and causing a big stir in the heronry.
Other notables were 12 CASPIAN TERN and 2 BONAPARTS GULL. Swarms of
BARN/CLIFF/TREE SWALLOWS,
The Williamson Sapsucker was not around. I havn't seen her for several
weeks.
