[SBB] Smith Ck., Mt. Hamilton, San Antonio Valley

Peggy Don, Pat Kenny, and I set out on the long drive over Mt. Hamilton this morning. Smith Creek: a male BLACK-HEADED GROSBEAK; a NORTHERN PYGMY-OWL on the north side of the hilltop behind the fire station (right at the saddle and up the steep hill). A WESTERN BLUEBIRD discovered the owl and soon the owl was being harrassed by several OAK TITMICE, a WHITE-BREASTED NUTHATCH, an AMERICAN ROBIN, along with the pair of bluebirds. Note: perhaps old news, but the trail along the creek has a fence across it just after the big field.

East of Mt. Hamilton: a male RING-NECKED DUCK was new for me in the area. Near Y-bar ranch we saw 3-4 LEWIS' WOODPECKERs and a pair of PHAINOPEPLAs. Another Lewis' Woodpecker was south of the junction. Near the cattle guard north of the junction we saw 3-4 SAGE SPARROWs and heard some sing.

We took this trip as much for the flowers as for the birds; the flowers were spectacular.
