All,
In hopes of some weather related fallout, Frank Vanslager and I first
checked out Calero Reservoir this morning which unfortunately had no hoped for
rarities. Best bird was a BARN OWL with one fuzzy young which has been nesting
in the open in the northeast corner of the stable farmhouse roof. Other
notables were a pair of CANADA GEESE with five to six fuzzy, yellow, young in tow;
two male GREATER SCAUP, one pair GADWALL, four WESTERN GREBES, fifteen WILD
TURKEYS and a low flying OSPREY. Hundreds of Swallows (NORTHERN
ROUGH-WINGED, VIOLET-GREEN, CLIFF, BARN AND TREE) swooped low over the water providing
excellent views as they passed nearby. We also noted, for the first time,
several HELMUTED GUINEAFOWL near the stables. Nothing of note, in fact almost
nothing, at Coyote Creek Golf Course. DOUBLE-CRESTED CORMORANTS swimming in
the Metcalf Fishing Pond were all displaying their double-crests. There was
nothing of note in the largest pond of Los Gatos Creek Park (Oka Ponds).
Take care,
Bob Reiling
