Good morning,
A quick stop at Pacheco Creek and San Felipe Road, right on the Santa
Clara/San Benito County line this morning revealed nothing surprising, but
one arrival that was not present a week ago. A single male Black-headed
Grosbeak was singing actively from a treetop on the SBT side of the creek.
Northern Rough-winged Swallows perched on utility lines and chasing insects.
At least two pair appear to be nesting under the bridge. Over the din of
Starling "song" several Pac. Slope Flycatchers were present.
At nearby San Felipe Lake, some 43 American White Pelicans were tightly
grouped, sleeping and preening. Many ducks still present, though a stop on
the westbound side of 152 and lack of scope made it tough to make many of
them out. Most appeared to be Northern Shoveler, with numbers of Cinnamon
Teal and Northern Pintail. Ruddy Ducks and Mallards, of course. The lake
has spilled from its perennial basin, and the best birding is east along 152
from the blue callbox adjacent to the lake. There are several good
pullouts, and small hills from which one may scan the entire area.
