Sunday afternoon (3-4PM) I checked out the fields at the end of Filbert
St. and the raptors are still fairly abundant. Three RED-TAILED hawks
chased each other around, calling and feeding, and one perched in a tiny
tree by the trail for some time, another on the fence. At least one was
an adult and one was a juvenile. I saw at least two NORTHERN HARRIER
juveniles, possibly a third (hard to keep track). At least four juvenile
WHITE-TAILED KITES were present. All these birds were feeding in the
fields at one time or other. This area made for good photography.
I then visited the end of Wavecrest and saw three RED-TAILED hawks both
soaring and perched. Walking out to the nearby airstrip, I counted 35
WHITE-TAILED KITES about, with half of them in the trees to the north
(Cypress, I think), most of them juveniles. A RED-SHOULDERED hawk was
heard calling from the same trees twice, but not seen. About a dozen
BROWN PELICAN in two groups flew northward over the water. Although the
kites were a visual treat, they were mostly more distant and I think
more skittish than at Filbert St.
