[SBB] BRBO, PECO, COLO, COTE, StiltSA, BASA, RUFF

All,

Alviso was full of birds this morning 9/15/07. I watched the subadult BROWN BOOBY for nearly 3 hours while it foraged over pond A11 and preened on the western dike separating A11 and A10. Also on the dike were two adult PELAGIC CORMORANTS, at times in the same scope view with the booby. Both COMMON LOONS were also still on A11 and a basic-type COMMON TERN perched on the stakes in A11 before flying off to forage over pond A9. An injured (left wing) female REDHEAD was hanging out with a female GREATER SCAUP on pond A10, although later Roland and Pat could not find the Redhead but did have an early RED-BREASTED MERGANSER.

I continued out to pond A9 on my bike, finding more FORSTER'S TERNS but no jaegers :(. Another basic COMMON TERN was in the northeast corner of pond A15 and 16 FORSTER'S TERNS were perched on stakes in A13. My total tally of BROWN PELICANS was 304+, including 272 in a single scan from the southern dike of pond A11. Several CASPIAN TERNS were flying around the ponds and several SORA and VIRGINIA RAILS were calling from Alviso Slough.

A quick stop at State and Spreckles in Alviso turned up 2 juvenile STILT SANDPIPERS and a juvenile female RUFF. The Stilt Sandpipers soon flew across the tracks to their favored pond. Heading out there, I found a third STILT SANDPIPER with the other two along with two juvenile BAIRD'S SANDPIPERS.

Got digiscoped images of almost all this stuff - hopefully some of them will come out OK.
