The Brown Booby was ranging over Salt Pond A11
toady, Saturday the 15th, at 7:05AM.
I observed the bird from the site where
the levee between ponds A12 and A11 joins the Alviso Slough Trail.
This is where the "Levee Closed" sign is. I'd guess it is about two
miles from the parking lot in the westerly clockwise
direction.
My attention was first drawn to the bird when a
gull began flying closely behind it, harassing the booby. The booby spent
several minutes ranging around the center of A11, flying about 2-3 feet above
the water. It then approached the levee between ponds A11 and A14.
This levee was covered with gulls, which erupted into the air with the booby's
approach.
At that point I lost the bird; it did not remain
over A11. I presume it jumped the levee into pond A14.
As observing this bird is likely a distance
endeavor, I'd suggest being suspicious at signs of agitated gulls.
Additionally, the immediate flight form of a booby is not unlike that of a
cormorant at a distance. However, the booby wanders about seemingly
aimlessly, looking for prey I'd presume. I've not seen cormorants do
this.
