A SWAINSON'S HAWK circle around the park entrance to Joseph D Grant
County Park, then flew off to the west, at about 10:00 AM today. It
showed dark flight feathers, light under-wing coverts (no dark
patagials), light neck and throat, and no distinctive sub-terminal tail
band. About an hour later an OLIVE-SIDED FLYCATCHER was perched on the
top of a dead tree near the junction of Los Huecos and Halls Valley
trails, showing a dark vest with white extending from belly to throat,
upright posture, and short tail. A male WESTERN TANANGER lit briefly
north of the trail back to Grant Lake. Other fun sitings included bright
Yellow Warblers south of the ranch house and also near Grant Lake, a
remarkably red Red-shouldered Hawk, a Caspian Tern, at least 7 Lesser
Yellowlegs and at least 3 Greater Yellowlegs conveniently together, and
California Quail and Wild Turkey by the dozens.
