This morning, 17 Oct 07, I joined Janet Hanson,
Stephanie Ellis, Lisa Meyers, Whitney, Mortimer, Bruce
Nussbaum, and Leslie Beebe at the Palo Alto Baylands
for some birding. As we were scoping the old yacht
harbor, 2 ELEGANT TERNS flew overhead, calling
repeatedly.
I spent most of the last week birding with 3 of my
brothers, who were in town for a visit. Some
highlights:
On Tuesday, 16 Oct 07, we visited the Gilroy sewage
ponds and found 6 GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GEESE, 12
CACKLING GEESE, and 3 BLUE-WINGED TEAL (2 males and a
female). On the way down there we refound the 2
CACKLING GEESE at the sod farm on Palm Dr.
Later, we stopped by Santa Teresa Park to look for
Rufous-crowned Sparrows. Instead we flushed up 2
COMMON POORWILLS and a GRASSHOPPER SPARROW from the
hillsides.
On Monday, 15 Oct 07, we had great looks at an OSPREY
eating a fish at Ogier Ponds.
Sunday, 14 Oct 07, we made the hike out the Alviso
Slough Trail, finding the continuing BROWN BOOBY
plunge-fishing over salt pond A11. In the northeast
corner of salt pond A10 there was a homogenous flock
of 550 GREATER SCAUP and 21 REDHEAD were scattered
about. Later we stopped at the Sunnyvale Sewage Ponds
and found the continuing WHITE-FACED IBIS.
On Saturday, 13 Oct 07, we were in San Antonio Valley,
where we had 5-6 LEWIS'S WOODPECKERS south of the
junction.
