Folks:
This morning, 10/7/07, I cycled the Alviso Slough Trail from the
Alviso Marina CP in a CCW direction. The best bird was a LAPLAND
LONGSPUR along the northern levee of Salt Pond A9, paralleling Coyote
Slough. The longspur was "flighty" and difficult of approach. I saw
it a number of times along the levee within 200 m of a wrecked boat
in the marsh north of the levee. It would sometimes fly with the
Savannah Sparrows that were also along the levee. Unlike the
Savannahs, I never saw it land in the marsh, rather it would return
to the verge beside the levee road.
Other birds of interest along this route included a male REDHEAD in
A15, a female/immature RED-BREASTED MERGANSER in A11, 1380 AM. WHITE
PELICANS (almost all in A9), 21 BROWN PELICANS (a real drop from a
week or two ago), and a PELAGIC CORMORANT continuing along the A10/A11 dike.
