[SBB] california thrasher, santa clara

Was doing fall cleanup in the garden today and noticed a bird that
looked different in the large pine a couple of houses down. Thinking
it might be one of our (seasonal) woodpeckers, I grabbed the binocs
out of the car. We played tag for a few minutes and I was about to
write it off as a mockingbird when I finally got a decent view of it
-- California thrasher, moving around deep inside the tree on the
branches and trunk.

We've had a thrasher at that tree once before, a few years ago. (the
tree is about 60' tall, and partially dead; it's normally inhabited
by doves and house finches, and I know both mockingbirds and my crow
pair nested in it this year; it's also where that juvenile robin
appeared a couple of weeks back, so I've learned to keep an eye on
it. you never know...)

Santa Clara central park area.

(out of area -- I made it out to half moon bay for the hawk show; if
you haven't gotten out there, DO IT. I went out there friday late
morning (11 until about 1PM), not expecting much because of the time
of day; my first thought was that all I saw were gulls soaring in the
wind -- then realized they weren't gulls. At one point, there were
seven red-tails and a white-tailed kite all hunting at the same time
-- at noon in a blustery wind.

Take 92 out to 1, left on pacific coast highway, right on poplar,
take it to the end. It's a real sight. It wasn't a great day for
photography (no, it was a rotten day for photography, because of the
combination of factors everything was badly backlit -- don't let
people tell you you can fix anything in photoshop! -- but here are
still a few decent photos to give you an idea of what you're
missing... http://www.flickr.com/photos/chuqui/sets/72157602295338141/ )
