This morning (Sun, 5/20) at around 8:45 am, Rich Page and I re-found the
SAGE SPARROW seen by Peggy Don yesterday on Mt Umunhum. We saw the bird
perched in a bush close to the trail leading to Bald Mountain about 100 yards
from the parking pull-out area. The bird then flew across the trail and up
the slope on the other side. Nice find, Peggy!
Among other birds of interest that we saw this morning along the Bald
Mountain trail were OLIVE-SIDED FLYCATCHER, ASH-THROATED FLYCATCHER, BLUE-GRAY
GNATCATCHER, ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER, YELLOW WARBLER, PURPLE FINCH, and LAZULI
BUNTING (including a female Lazuli Bunting carrying nesting material).
WRENTITS seemed to be particularly active and visible throughout the trail,
and I saw a group of four excitedly hopping around together in a bush
- most likely young of the year.
We did not hear or see any Black-chinned Sparrows this morning.
