Hello All,
At the little pond below Monte Bello's Gate 5 today
3/26/2007, three Lawrence's Goldfinches left their roost thicket at sunrise. I
had one here last Friday as well. The local Red-breasted Nuthatch was vocal
today also. First-of-season birds for the pond included Warbling Vireo and
Pacific-slope Flycatcher. A Red-legged Frog vocalized briefly just before
sunrise.
At Hidden Villa I had a big surprise when a
Peregrine Falcon took advantage of the windy weather for some advanced
aeronautics over Elephant Mtn. at about 1:30 PM, just before the rain got
serious. It circled etc. for about 5 minutes before stooping way off to the
southeast. Many Townsend's Warblers are still present and singing. Several
Blue-gray Gnatcatchers have settled in to traditional territories, especially at
chaparral/oak edges. A Red-tailed hawk was observed carrying sticks, and another
Bushtit was nestbuilding as well.
