I stopped by the Great Egret colony at Shorebird Way in
Mountain View Thursday to scout the photo ops and plan some
shoots.
There were 27 occupied nests and 10 with no residents. Some of
the unoccupied nests may have been false starts. Generally,
the nests were still at an early stage of development. The
egrets will have to do more nest-building before those piles
of branches are large enough to house a few offspring.
There was a lot of courtship behavior and display going on.
It's a great show right now. The sycamores have not leafed
out yet, so the residents are quite visible. In a couple of
weeks, they will more occluded by leaf cover. Catch this
performance while you can.
