Saturday (3/17) I showed up Ed Levin at first sunlight hoping to see that
Phainopepla. No luck, and I left as Bob Reiling arrived -- he reported no
luck either. I guess it was a one-day wonder. I made use of that nice light
to photograph the Tree Swallows and Western Bluebirds there, which allowed
close approach, as they have in the past, around the nest near the bulletin
board just west of the corrals in the Spring Valley area. On to the Sandy
Wool part of the park, where I was able to photo a BEWICK'S WREN carrying
nest material, and a RED-BREASTED SAPSUCKER, both at the far east edge of
the Elm picnic area.
Today (3/18) I set out early again, and ended up driving around the county
freeways trying to get away from that "patchy fog" (early photography no
good without sunlight). I finally got some sun at the Hacienda parking lot
to Almaden Quicksilver Park, and then a perfect blue sky along Hicks Rd. A
WILD TURKEY was in the overflow lot at Hacienda, and along Hicks I saw a
flock of about a dozen more WILD TURKEYS at the Sierra Azul lot, and heard
first of spring PACIFIC-SLOPE FLYCATCHER (1), WARBLER VIREO (2), and
ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER (5+). Ann Verdi was also out taking in the gorgeous
morning along Hicks. No sightings of the migrants, and I wasn't able to
get a good photo of the turkeys.
