Re: [SBB] Stevens Creek Trail, Mountain View

Yesterday, 3/9, I was also in this area on my lunchtime walk.  Around 1pm I saw a pair of HOODED MERGANSERS in the creek just downstream from where Highway 85 crosses over it.  These are the first hooded mergansers I've seen in the creek since doing this route almost daily 2 years ago.  The male was doing some head-bobbing.  Also in this area was a BELTED KINGFISHER flying up and down the drainage.  It came out and into a tree with something large in its mouth.  I had no binoculars so I couldn't see what it was holding or whether the bird was male or female.  It was, however, very vocal.

This morning, 3/9/07, Pat Kenny and I walked the Stevens Creek Trail from the Yuba Drive entrance near El Camino to the far side of Middlefield.  Birds of note were a WESTERN TANAGER at the end of Yuba Drive, probably the same bird Pat found here last December on the Palo Alto Christmas Bird Count, and a WHITE-THROATED SPARROW near the Central Avenue pedestrian bridge over Stevens Creek.
