[SBB] Palo Alto Summer Bird Count

When Garth Harwood began owling around 5 am, the 27Th annual bird count on Saturday June 2 was under way. It didn't end until Mike Rogers made one more pass in the evening for a couple of birds he missed earlier in the day. And when Bill Bousman finished the countdown, we had tallied an unofficial 152 species, the same number as last year, and ahead of the average for the count.

The day began with fog at lower elevations, but clear skies greeted those birders along Skyline Drive, and eventually the sun came out for everyone.

Mike found two species that had only been recorded once on the previous 26 counts; a ruddy turnstone and a rose-breasted grosbeak. Birds recorded only twice in past years included a ruddy turnstone, red knots and common goldeneye. Other uncommon species were long-eared owl, sage sparrow, common loon and pileated woodpecker. It is possible that late returns may include other uncommon to rare species.

I would like to thank everyone who participated, especially Ruth and Gene Troetschler for once again hosting the countdown. It is only by your willing involvement and enthusiasm that this count continues. Please make a note to not only volunteer for the Christmas Bird Count in the same areas, but return next summer for the 28Th summer count. Watch the Avocet and SBB for the opportunity to sign up.
