All,
This morning Frank Vanslager and I first went to the Coyote Creek Field
Station Waterbird Pond where we had a breeding plumaged LESSER
YELLOWLEGS with several GREATER YELLOWLEGS. The pond itself now has a
fairly large island which is becoming overgrown because of the low water
levels. On and around the edges of the island were large numbers of
peeps (mostly WESTERN SANDPIPERS) and good numbers of SEMIPALMATED
PLOVERS (enjoyed looking thru the peeps for "goodies"). Phalaropes in the
pond spent their time chasing minutia in the water while the Dowitchers
tried to catch a few Z's between snacks. Several BONAPARTE'S GULLS were in
one of the northern most slag ponds but there was nothing of interest in Salt
Pond A18 or in the Coyote Creek mud flats (north of Salt Pond A18).
The two pairs of BLACK SKIMMERS were still on the islands in Salt Pond
A16 (islands #1 and #2). Little other than Phalaropes were
in New Chicago Marsh.
Take care,
