[SBB] SFBBO Sharp-shinned Hawk band return

I thought this might be of interest to birders...

We received a band return on a Sharp-shinned hawk that was recently found deceased in British Columbia. We banded this bird as a hatch year male on 11/26/06 at our Coyote Creek Field Station (CCFS) in Milpitas. We recaptured this bird on 12/31/06 and then again on 3/11/07 at CCFS.

According to the Birds of North America (BNA # 482, Bildstein, Keith L. et al.), Sharp-shinned hawks are a partial, sometimes long-distance migrant (>1,500 km or approximately 932 miles) throughout their North American range with a peak spring movement in April on the west coast. This bird was found on 5/5/07 in Summerland, British Columbia which is over 1,100 miles north of Milpitas. (Summerland, BC is 150 miles east of Vancouver.) I have posted some pictures of the bird to our website news page at http://sfbbo.org/news/index.php and to the monthly banding report link on the same page.

Thanks
Stephanie
