All,
This morning Frank Vanslager and I first stopped at the Gilroy Water
Treatment Facility where we discovered that the pair of MUTE SWANS had
returned and, although two ponds had water in them, the only other bird of
note was a basic plumaged WILSON'S PHALAROPE. We then went to the Santa
Clara County side of the Pajaro River where Peggy Don had just photographed
a possible female Rose-breasted Grosbeak. Unfortunately, for our
efforts, we only saw female BLACK-HEADED GROSBEAKS and a
CALIFORNIA THRASHER feeding on the berries where she had seen the RBGR. We
also saw the continuing adult male BLUE GROSBEAK in the field west of
the RR tracks 150 to 200 YDS before (north of) the 1/2
(mile?) sign. At one point the male BLGR was joined by what appeared to be
two juveniles (no blue on the upper rumps). The BLGR also spent
a lot of the time singing, at one point quite close to us on a utility pole,
more photos for Peggy :-) Other birds included LAZULI BUNTING, GRASSHOPPER
SPARROW, ASH-THROATED FLYCATCHER, WESTERN KINGBIRD, and singing
SWAINSON'S THRUSH.
Take care,
