Today, 4 Jul 07, I walked out the railroad tracks into
New Chicago Marsh. I had 6 SNOWY PLOVERS in the pond
that is west of the tracks in the northwest corner of
the marsh. Two of these looked to be immature birds.
They were all foraging and roosting here. There was a
single SEMIPALMATED PLOVER with them. There were
probably 50 or so LEAST SANDPIPERS scattered about the
marsh, but only a single WESTERN SANDPIPER. I counted
about 230 phalaropes, no more than 50 or so being
RED-NECKEDS and the rest WILSONS. I had a single
adult LESSER YELLOWLEGS and 6 GREATERS. There was also
a WHIMBREL and a CASPIAN TERN here. A BURROWING OWL
was on the small mound where the tracks cross the
entrance road, and another owl was on the fence along
Disk Dr.
I forgot to mention that on Sunday, along the Pajaro
River, we also had a singing GRASSHOPPER SPARROW.
