Today during the lunch hour I watched a Varied Thrush
taking a bath in Stevens Creek, just west of where Highway 85 crosses over the
creek. This is in Mountain View. First, it was its size that caught
my attention, but then I noticed the orange eyebrow, and finally the dark breast
band. Other birds also seen from the trail between Landels School and
Highway 85 were the usuals - Black Phoebe, Golden Crowned Sparrows, White
Crowned Sparrows, Calif Towhees, Yellow-rumped Warblers, Bushtits, Cedar
Waxwings, and quite a few Anna's Hummingbirds. Five mallards were in
the creek bed, which doesn't have too much water, although it is still
moving. A Red-Shouldered Hawk was up at the top of a eucalyptus
tree over by Landels School. I walk this route route at least 3 times
a week during lunchtime. If I took my binoculars, I doubt I'd make it back
to work for the afternoon!
