Following up on Bill's recent post, I paid a lunchtime visit to
Stevens Creek, walking south along the east side from Crittenden. First,
I didn't see any sparrows at what I took to be Bill's "sparrow puddles".
>From the bridge, I saw an immature COMMON MOORHEN entering the reeds
just north -- I don't recall having seen this species here before.
Because I was walking into the sun, I headed south quickly, and by
the Moffet housing I met Peggy Don coming back north. We proceeded
slowly north from there. A hosrt distance north of the main (southern)
transmission line crossing, the young female BLACK-THROATED GRAY WARBLER
popped into view, and posed very nicely for us. Then about 100 or 150
yards south of the lone eucalyptus, we heard two Waterthrush calls.
Peggy got a couple of quick looks at this NORTHERN WATERTHRUSH, but I
didn't. (Quite unfair, since she had seen it earlier this year.) About
15 minutes later (already 1:10 PM), it called several more times, and
on this occasion I was able to get excellent views as it foraged in an
adequately-lit bare area across the channel. This was the "white" bird.
Other warblers found were COMMON YELLOWTHROAT and of course Yellow-rumped.
There was also a perched RED-SHOULDERED HAWK, plus the usual array of
species for this location.
A couple of belated reports: Yesterday there were two male
BLUE-WINGED TEAL in Adobe Creek by the start of Charleston Slough.
No Skimmers on the island, however, despite the high tide. And
about 10 days ago (I'd have to look up the precise date) there was
a continuing OAK TITMOUSE at the start of the parcourse by the
Charleston Road marsh -- singing, in fact.
