[SBB] Ed Levin Park, Sierra Road, etc.

All,

Today 1/15/07, I took advantage of the holiday to make a visit to Ed Levin Park. At the Elm Picnic Area I found a VARIED THRUSH (female), a MERLIN, and a RED-BREASTED SAPSUCKER. Another RED-BREASTED SAPSUCKER was in the upper parking lot near the dog run and a TOWNSEND'S WARBLER was in the nearby eucalyptus. Heading up to the sycamores on the hillside, I found 2 to 3 WHITE-THROATED SWIFTS, 2 RUFOUS-CROWNED SPARROWS, and at least one PRAIRIE FALCON. The falcon was initially seen carrying (and eating) a rodent south to a thermal, where it rose up and then headed east. Thirteen minutes later, it, or another PRFA, came back to forage along the ridge.

Coming back by way of Sierra Road, I saw two GOLDEN EAGLES on a high voltage tower, 16 HORNED LARKS, and 2 BURROWING OWLS (single birds at holes 0.3 miles east and 0.3 miles west of the summit).

A quick check of the Palo Alto duck pond failed to turn up the Cattle Egret reported to pen-bird yesterday, but 2 male BROWN-HEADED COWBIRDS were with the blackbird flock. A quick check of the golf course by the Geng Road pond turned up the 2 SNOW GEESE (adult and immature) and the 5 GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GEESE (a group of two adults and an immature and another pair of adults).
