Making the rounds of the San Jose and Milpitas area today, mostly parks.
Grant Ranch Park: the Tundra Swan continued on Grant Lake, where I saw
it around 9 to 9:15 AM. Excellent find, Jim (Thomas), and a county bird
for me. Apart from lots of Northern Shovelers and Ruddy Ducks, the other
waterfowl here were a few Canada Geese, three male Ring-necked Ducks and
2 or more Buffleheads.
Alum Rock Park: tried to find the Dipper between YSI and Mineral Springs
area -- dipper sign, but no bird. I saw a man putting out seed for and
calling in the Steller's Jays in this area, resulting in an impressive
flock of 18 feeding on the ground, with more heard nearby.
Ed Levin Park (south section): Back in December, when I saw the male
Yellow-bellied Sapsucker from the park side of the tamarisk row, all
views were partly obscured and I couldn't be sure of its ID (vis-a-vis
Red-naped). Today I tried from the road, and got excellent views of all
features (except the belly) as it stayed in one smal area, particularly
focusing on a well or wells in one spot. This was about 1 PM. I walked
around briefly looking for other Sapsuckers, but, didn't detect any.
Finally, at the Arzino Ranch and vicinity I didn't find any significant
goose flock; two separate Burrowing Owls were a consolation prize.
