On Thursday, 4 Jan 07, I braved the morning rain and went to the Shoreline Park overflow lot, where I was able to find the 2 SNOW GEESE and the BRANT in with many CANADA GEESE. As done previously by others, I scoped out the extreme northwest corner of A1 and was able to see at least 4 BLACK SKIMMERS on the island there. I tried scoping A2W to see if I could find something like a Tufted Duck perhaps, but was only able to find 3 EURASIAN WIGEONS. The PELAGIC CORMORANT was also identifiable at the extreme of my scope's ability. A check of New Chicago Marsh for the Ruff was unproductive, but I had 2 SAY'S PHOEBES along the entrance road.
On Friday, 5 Jan 07, I went back to the west side of Coyote Creek near the golf course to check for the Solitary Sandpiper. Although the previous day's rain had reconstituted the pool, the bird was not to be found.
So, I headed back to New Chicago Marsh and quickly found
the 2 ROSS'S GEESE along the entrance road, but still no Ruff. At the butterfly garden I found the duller of the 2 YELLOW WARBLERS (the brighter one was seen on the 1st).
From there I went up Sierra Road to the summit, where I was able to find 2 HORNED LARKS.
Back at home I walked the base of Tulare Hill and was able to pick up a ROCK WREN and 2 RUFOUS-CROWNED SPARROWS.
