Folks:
It has been a disappointing CBC season, what with fair weather on
each of the five counts I participated in. Just because this is
California, there is no reason we can't have some gnarly weather, get
wet and cold, and suffer. So my attitude brightened considerably
this morning, 1/4/07, and I took off in the light rain to work on my 2007 list.
A stop at the Palo Alto Baylands was uneventful. Two SEMIPALMATED
PLOVERS were on the mudflats and are less common in winter here.
A pair of HOODED MERGANSERS were on the pond on Geng Road.
I parked at the small lot at the entrance road to the ITT
buildings--this road is off the frontage road just north of the
Renzel Marsh. I walked about halfway down and found the BLUE-GRAY
GNATCATCHER in the coyotebrush.
I then moved on to Matadero Creek, where I found an immature Cooper's
Hawk, also looking for rare sparrows. But while it was sitting over
Matadero Creek in the rain, I found a large sparrow flock on the
southeast side which included the WHITE-THROATED SPARROW.
I finished up at Shoreline Park. The large flock of Canadas was at
the far end of the kite flying area. With them was the adult and
immature SNOW GOOSE and the BRANT that have been around a while. But
I couldn't find any Cackling Geese. An immature BROWN PELICAN was on
Shoreline Lake--we have few winters when this pelican stays here into January.
