Jean Myers, Phyllis Swanson and I birded Panoche Valley yesterday. Jan 3
on a beautiful sunny day. We were thrilled with 2 Lewis's Woodpeckers,
and 2 male Phainopepla along Panoche Rd. One LEWO, at very close range,
was found in a large oak tree near the Bump family residence near marker
#98. Here we saw our first Ferruginous Hawk of the day, an immature.
Say's Phoebe's and Loggerhead shrike were numerous along our route.
Large flocks of Horned Lark and dozens of Long billed Curlew were seen
in fields. Hundreds of sparrow mostly Lark and Savannah Sparrow, seen
while looking for the elusive Vesper Sp. Our third Road Runner was seen
at close range as it pecked at squirrel road kill. Golden Eagles, 3
Merlin and numerous hawks and C. Ravens were seen. A close encounter
with a Prairie Falcon that flew in front of Jeans car and perched for
nice scope views, was our last good bird of the day. I counted 75
species, although that could change after I hear back from Jean and Phyllis.
